Di'ja has recently been missing from the Nigerian music scene. Her Senegalese Krio and Northern Nigerian
heritage is reflective in many of her songs. Di’Ja has been in
Canada, where she studied the ropes, put work in, and got some
recognition for her work. In reality, Di’Ja is not Nigerian. She is
Senegalese, by virtue of her father’s nationality. But her time in
Northern Nigeria, Canada and the USA have been a blessing to her craft.
This uniqueness and
fusion of influences can be a curse too. The singer is still on a quest
to find her one true sound, with each new music release feeling like an
experimentation. The success of ‘Aww’ did help her status, but other songs have failed to fare so well.
This
year, there has been no Di’ja, or where she appeared, it was too
little. According to many sources, Di’Ja is married, and has a pregnancy
that is being kept away from the public glare. If that is the true
state of things in her life, (and nothing has happened to state
otherwise), she would have to balance the demands of a home and
motherhood, with her quest for musical satisfaction and achievement.
This year, the balance has not truly been achieved. Di’ja only has a single, released in January titled ‘Take kiss’, and featuring Mavin producer, Babyfresh.
The single failed to fly, with new reports revealing that she has
become pregnant for her husband. That has not been confirmed, but her
growing absence on the screens and on the red carpets has fed the
rumors.
Has Mavin Records missed her?
Di’Ja still continues
to retain her fans, with the majority of people drawn to her
personality belonging to the elite demographic. People with more
metrosexual and Afropolitan inclinations. This is a good thing, through
and through. ‘Aww’ still remains her greatest contribution to the Mavin
course, although her writing skills and happy mien will be missed around
the house. There’s also, the potential for her to be more than she is.
That has remained untapped and exploited, and her absence from the scene
is scuttling any efforts to do so. It also hasn’t helped that there has
been no official statement to address the rumours and put to rest the
mind of fans. There has only been weak denials from ‘her camp’.
When she eventually
does return, she will find a scene almost unchanged in terms of
listenership and competition. There’s not much going on in her eclectic
space, which is undefined due to no one taking a hold of it, and
expressing what it means to be a young, woman with an alternative
creative process for making music. YBNL are on the prowl though, with
their new maid with shiny guitar, Temi Ovwasa, who even had elements of
‘Aww’ treatment in her video.
Di’Ja will be back,
and if history is to be trusted, Don Jazzy will come through with a bang
for her. Tiwa did disappear, only to return with a baby and an album.
